The Anarchy Online story revolves mainly around two factions, the rebel worker caste, the Clans and the hypercorporation Omni-Tek. The two factions are fighting for control over Rubi-Ka. A third faction of Neutral observers have decided not to take sides in conflict. The war has been going on and off for centuries. There have also been larger conflicts between Omni-Tek and other corporations to control Rubi-Ka. Rubi-Ka, is the only known source in the universe of the fictional substance notum. The Omni-Tek, have been granted sole ownership rights to the planet has controlled notum for many years and has benefited tremendously when it was discovered that the mineral would revolutionize, and eventually become the key component of, nanotechnology. Discovering notum's properties helped develop other technologies that seem much like magic, including programs that create fire and ice, heal injuries, protect people from harm and even resurrection is possible. The corporation was free to do as it wished with its colonists and the planet. The Omni-Tek did its best to treat the people well, they have even received commendations for its treatment of workers. Their policies degraded, until finally, 500 years after settlement, a significant number of poorly treated colonists started a rebellion and began to trade stolen notum to a rival corporation which led to a series of wars between Omni-Tek and the colonists, and between Omni-Tek and its rival corporations.
