PotCO allows players to create their own customized pirate avatar. Players interact with major characters from the film including Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann, Tia Dalma, Hector Barbossa and Joshamee Gibbs who assigns quests and/or instructs on the use of weapons. Quests require players to defeat enemies and creatures on land and to sink enemy ships during battles at sea. Pirats of The Caribbean Online quests follow a central storyline in which the pirate helps Jack Sparrow to recruit a crew and retrieve his ship, the Black Pearl. Enemies in the game include a fictionalised version of the East India Trading Co., the British Royal Navy, and undead skeleton pirates commanded by Jolly Roger. As pirates complete quests they earn notoriety, gold, and access to additional weapons. Weapons for pirates include pistols, cutlasses, voodoo, throwing daggers and grenades. The game world includes island locations from the film including Port Royal and Tortuga as well as additional islands such as Cuba. Pirates can board certain enemy ships and attempt to defeat the enemies on board for additional gold and notoriety while sailing to the islands.
